Houston Spirit Bottle Engraving
Engraving onsite for spirit companies was the bulk of my business for many years. I will always be grateful for those experiences and the opportunities afforded by it. At a time of transition, engraving wine and spirits provided stability…and plenty of fun. One added benefit to working with wine and spirits is that you are inadvertently exposed to other languages. When I began learning Spanish years ago, it became invaluable at events to engage with others in a way that was most comfortable for them. Once I became comfortable with my conversational Spanish, I turned my attention to learning French. Enter D’ussé cognac. My proficiency with French is slowly progressing. I took a bit of a hiatus during the clinical year of my master’s program, however I am back to it. I would not place any weight on my translation, but the name seems to translate to being “of use.” Obviously, I am certain that the recipient is putting this bottle to excellent use.
This bottle was engraved at an event for D’ussé cognac. The event was during the holiday season and I assume that this bottle was given as a gift. On the initial look, the name “Sanchez” looks pretty simple and in some ways unremarkable. However, as a penman, the first thought that comes to mind is from which letters can I flourish and what are my options for an ornate capital. I ended up using a standard “S”, but extended the exit stroke into a flourish. I know that some fundamentalists detest the flourish from the exit stroke. However, since lettering police do not exist, I do it all of the time with gusto. I had considered turning the “S” into a twister; however, I gauged the audience for this bottle and took the standard route.
The flourish off of the “Z” was just a standard Spencerian exit flourish.
I hope that the client is enjoying this bottle as much as I enjoyed engraving it.
